A Good Group

Yesterday the old sailors gathered to take down the mast on Rodger and Ruth's sailboat.  It was like a barn raising in reverse. Rodger has sold the ship and it needed to be packaged for shipment.  Kadizzle has been a sailor for a long time and will testify that sailors are a special breed.  When sailors need something done they come together.  It is almost like a religious group without all the rules. There is one simple rule.  Don't just stand there do something to help.  Sailors are at the mercy of the universe.  Actually we all are, but sailors face it more directly.  If old power boat Willy sees a storm he guns his motor and goes home.  On the other hand the sailor up the creek or lake cannot outrun a storm, so sailors have to hunker down and ride it out. This means cooperation.  The old saying " A friend in need is a friend indeed".  Sailors know this better than anyone.  When your boat is sinking or has gone aground having a friend on another boat is a warm feeling.  Sailors operate on the principle, someday I may need help, so it is best to help everyone you can so when my day comes they will help me".   This seems like a simple idea, but as a society we have adopted a different mantra,  I got mine the hell with you.
