Have we become a police state?

Yesterday Kadizzle took off for Taylor, North Dakota with Stroupini to get some trees for his backyard. As we drove into the little town of Dodge, North Dakota Stroupini slowed down, but not enough.  As luck would have it an officer of the law was driving East while we were going West.  It was apparent the sheriff's deputy was going to stop Stroupini.  Stroupini pulled into a side street and the patrolman followed.  After asking Stroupine for his drivers licence the deputy asked Kadizzle for his.  This seemed like a very strange request and Kadizzle questioned the officer as to why he would as for the passenger's license.  The officer said it was for his protection.  Protection from what? He had already asked if we were armed.  Of course we were not.  Two men in their seventies would not pose much of a threat.  The deputy was a big man and could probably have knocked Stroupini over with a fart.  It might have taken a little work with the night stick to subdue Kadizzle.  Kadizzle gave he officer his license.  When the officer went back to his car to print out a ticket for Kadizzle he started to take Kadizzle's license with him.  Kadizzle asked why? Apparently the officer was going to call in both license.  Kadizzle told him no, Kadizzle wanted his license back.  There had been a little discussion earlier and the officer said Kadizzle did not have to give him the license. The officer said it was for his safety, so Kadizzle agreed saying indeed he did want the officer to be safe.  Now all of this raises he question, what if it was a van load of people, or a bus load of people?  Would everyone on the bus or van be checked?  Were it a van load of Mexicans or black people how would it be handled? There is nothing wrong with good police work, and in this encounter everyone was polite and cordel, however it did give the impression of a country run by Trump.
