Rural Telephone cooperatives are one of the biggest abusers of government subsidies that ever existed. The whole concept of rural phone coops is outdated. With cell phones they are a relic of the past that is unneeded. It used to be farmers could not get phone service, but now they can call from the cell phone in the tractor. The sad part of this story is that small towns could be served by digital phone service are kept from doing so by the clever maneuvering of the rural phone coops. Rural phone coops have found a way to funnel the subsidies they get from the federal government directly to the customer. The whole thing violates every principle of a free market Republicans love to harp about. However, West River Telecommunications is run by Republicans.
