Sailboats have multiplied like weeds.

Yesterday as the crew of the Sovereign pulled into the winter storage yard for the boats Kadizzle and The Commander both remarked how the sail boats had taken over. Being a sailor for 25 years old Kadizzle has seen it go both ways. Sailboats had their first surge when the energy crises started. People saw it as a way to beat the game. High fuel prices don't affect the wind much. As usual this summer most of the expensive power boats sat at the dock, floating cabins. Every year a few more sailors have been joining the ranks. Looking around the boat yard there was only one power boat of any consequence. In defense of the piston heads it must be said they now mostly store there boats indoors in Riverdale. There is something about luxury that is counter productive. In a few minutes I will have to walk to the end of the driveway to get the paper. There was a time it was right outside the door. Now, the inconvenience forced me to take a little walk and smell the morning air. Sailing works the same way. On a sailboat you sit outside and enjoy the planet with no noisy motor. Sure a sailboat is inconvenient by power boat standards, but what is the point of looking out the window of your power boat while you push buttons, isn't that what you do when you watch television. People are waking up to the pleasures of inconvenience, it might be gardening, or it might be hiking, but doing things the old way has it's rewards. Who is enjoying the scenery the most? The guy driving down the road at 70mph or the guy pedaling at 8mph? At the end of the day who has a sense of accomplishment?
